take the edge off something
To make something less strong, less bad, etc. 可以翻译成“减轻、缓解”，例如：
The sandwich took the edge off my appetite.
I took an aspirin to take the edge off the pain.
A squeeze of lemon takes the edge off the sweetness.
go easy on somebody
This phrase is used to tell somebody to treat a person in a gentle way and not to be too angry or severe. 就是“别那么严厉那么凶，友善点儿，温柔点儿”。例如：
Go easy on her—she’s having a really hard time at the moment.
如果后面接的是something，则表示“少吃点儿，少用点儿”之意，例如我们可以跟糖尿病患者说：Go easy on the sugar.
character witness
品德信誉见证人，在法庭中对涉讼之一方人格名誉作证的见证人(a witness who testifies under oath as to the good reputation of another person in the community where that person lives)。
在这里character指的是人们对你的看法，例如你值不值得信任或者靠不靠谱。比如a character reference就是跟你特别熟悉的人给你的雇主写的一封信，来告诉他你的一些优良品质。
