A-list = [usually before noun] used to describe the group of people who are considered to be the most famous, successful or important.
He only invited A-list celebrities to his parties.
也可以作为名词使用,表示a list or group of the most admired or desirable people, as for a job or social gathering,例如:
It’s a private party for Hollywood’s A list.
The boss gave me his A-list of people we should try to recruit.
B-list = [usually before noun] used to describe the group of people who are considered to be fairly famous, successful or important, but not as much as the A-list people.
a TV chat show full of B-list celebrities
Plan A = the thing or things somebody intends to do if everything happens as they expect.
Shall we go for plan A or plan B?
同理,Plan B就是the thing or things somebody intends to do if their first plan is not successful.
If Plan A fails, go to Plan B.
from A to B = from one place to another
For me a car is just a means of getting from A to B.
X / Y = a person, a number, an influence, etc. that is not known or not named. 例如:
Let’s suppose X knows what Y is doing.
A / B = used to represent a person, for example in an imagined situation or to hide their identity. 例如:
Assume A knows B is guilty.
from A to Z = including everything there is to know about something.
He knew his subject from A to Z.
the big C = an informal name for cancer, any form of cancer.
I thought I just had an iron deficiency or something, but the lab tests showed it was the big C.
with a capital A, B, etc. = used to emphasize that a word has a stronger meaning than usual in a particular situation, or to mean that a particular idea or concept is being understood in only the strictest sense.
He was romantic with a capital R.
I am hungry with a capital H! Let’s eat!
No, it’s not an emergency with a capital E. I can wait until the end of the day.
Well, it’s not literature with a capital L, but it’s still a good story.
When he talks about photography, he means with a capital P. He would never think to consider pictures taken on smartphones.
to a T / tee = used to say that something is exactly right for somebody, succeeds in doing something in exactly the right way, etc.
Her new job suits her to a T. (= it is perfect for her).
You look beautiful. That color really suits you to a tee.
The novel captures the feeling of the pre-war period to a T.
A-OK = in good condition; in an acceptable manner; operating or existing in perfect working order or in the best condition to be hoped for.
The party went off A-OK.
I’ve felt A-OK since I left the hospital last week.z
So far the new engine is running A-OK!
Z’s [pl.] = sleep.
I need to catch some Z’s.
K = one thousand.
She earns 40K (= £40 000) a year.
p.d.q. = pretty damn / damned quick (= very fast)
跟asap (as soon as possible)感觉挺像,例如:
Make sure you get here p.d.q.
n/a = not applicable (used on a form as an answer to a question that does not apply to you)
w/o = without
i.e. = used to explain exactly what the previous thing that you have mentioned means
e.g. = for example
etc. = used after a list to show that there are other things that you could have mentioned
B & B = bed and breakfast
