South Korea on Tuesday introduced a new workplace anti-bullying law to tackle workplace harassment with penalties including fines and imprisonment. According to Yonhap News, the new law defines workplace harassment as acts that lead to physical or mental suffering or worsening of the working environment by employers or workers who abuse their power or status. Examples include forcing someone to drink, smoke, or attend a company dinner, verbal abuse, or embarrassing colleagues in front of others. Employers are required to immediately conduct an investigation and take action once such a case is reported. They are also prohibited from taking any measures against victims or those who report the conduct. Otherwise, they could face up to three years in jail and a fine of up to about 25,400 U.S. dollars. A 2017 study found colleagues and work superiors have bullied about 70 percent of employees in the country.
