“All of us who had the honor of working with Paul feel inexpressible loss today,” read a statement published on behalf of Allen’s family and company. “He possessed a remarkable intellect and a passion to solve some of the world’s most difficult problems.”
Earlier this month, Allen announced that he was once again receiving treatment for lymphoma. He was last treated for the disease in 2009.
He had struck a hopeful tone in that announcement. “My doctors are optimistic that I will see good results from the latest therapies, as am I,” he said.
Allen, who was worth an estimated $20.3 billion at the time of his death, is best known for cofounding Microsoft in 1975 with Bill Gates, a high school friend. He left the company in 1983 after receiving a diagnosis for Hodgkin’s disease, which he beat.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella released a statement Monday praising Allen’s "inquisitiveness, curiosity and push for high standards."
A sports fan, Allen bought the Portland Trail Blazers basketball team in 1988 for $70 million. The team is now worth more than 18 times that amount. He acquired the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks for $194 million in 1997. That investment has also appreciated dramatically. Forbes estimates the team is worth $2.58 billion.
In recent years, Allen has dedicated considerable resources to charitable causes. He signed the Giving Pledge in 2010, and gave away more than $2.5 billion during his lifetime, including $500 million to the Allen Institute for Brain Science, which is working to map the human brain. He was listed among America’s biggest giversin 2017.
In Monday’s statement, Allen’s sister, Jody, said, “For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends. At this time of loss and grief for us — and so many others — we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day.”
