双语:印尼地震、海啸死亡人数升至1944人,搜救工作即将结束

  The death toll from powerful quakes and tsunami, which struck Indonesia’s Central Sulawesi province on Sept. 28, has jumped to 1,944, according to the latest news briefing.

  9月9日,印尼中苏拉威西省发生强烈地震和海啸,造成多人死亡。根据最新的新闻发布会,已跃升至1944人。

  The search operations are expected to end on Thursday, though the number is expected to rise with thousands still missing, said military and disaster agency officials.

  After the disaster, the country’s President Joko Widodo authorized the influx of international aid. The European Union, as well as 10 countries, including the United States, Australia and China, have offered assistance.

  China pays close attention to the Indonesian earthquakes and tsunami, and the Red Cross Society of China has provided emergency assistance to the country, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang at a daily news briefing on Monday.

  Children in the Indonesian city of Palu began returning to school on Monday to tidy up their classrooms and to help gather data on how many of them will be coming back after the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the city.

  Authorities are focusing on repairing damaged infrastructure, such as roads, ports, airports, telecommunication services, fuel supplies and power, according to the spokesman for the national disaster management agency.
