Former President George H.W. Bush mourned the death of his cardiologist, who was fatally shot by another cyclist while riding his bicycle to work Friday.

　　Dr. Mark Hausknecht, who worked at Houston Methodist Hospital, was shot and killed by a man who passed him while pedaling in the opposite direction, Executive Assistant Police Chief Troy Finner said at a news conference.

　　The shooter turned and fired two bullets at the 65-year-old heart doctor before riding away.

　　Hausknecht was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Finner.It’s unclear if Hausknecht was targeted by the shooter, or if it was a random attack.

　　The suspect is believed to be a white or Hispanic male about 30 years old, wearing a tan baseball cap, gray warmup jacket and khaki shorts and riding a light-colored mountain bike.

　　The former President’s spokesman, Jim MicGrath, issued a statement saying: “President George H.W. Bush was deeply saddened by the tragic circumstances surrounding the untimely passing of Dr. Mark Hausknecht, and sends his most sincere condolences to the Hausknecht family, his colleagues at Houston Methodist, and his friends.”

　　Hauskenecht treated the former President for an irregular heartbeat in 2000. “I have no suspicion that there is a heart attack here and I do not think his life is in peril in anyway,” the doctor said at the time.

　　Houston Methodist Hospital said Hauskenecht was “an important member” of its staff.
