The Palace Museum has plans to open several previously closed parts of Beijing’s Forbidden City to the public, expanding the percentage of visitable areas from 65 percent to 76 percent this year, and then on to 85 percent in the future, a museum representative told the Xinhua News Agency.

According to a report from Xinhua, three areas of the Forbidden City will be opened to the public, including the pathways between the Duanhong Bridge and Longzong Gate, and the Archery Pavilion and the Hall of Literary Glory, as well as the Western Canal Street.

"We are making adjustments to the functions these heritage buildings perform," Shan Jixiang, curator of the Palace Museum, told Xinhua.

According to Shan, the museum will gradually relocate administrative and scientific research departments to outside the surrounding red wall of the Forbidden City to make the historic buildings these departments occupied accessible to the public. For instance, the buildings that once held the technology and cultural relic protection departments will be refurbished into a gallery that will also be gradually opened to scholars and the general public.

When renovation began in 2002, areas open to the public only accounted for 30 percent of the Forbidden City’s total area, Shan explained. By last year, this rose to 65 percent.

"We’ve reported to the State Council our plans to expand public areas to 80 percent by 2020, which means we can reach 85 percent for the centennial celebration in 2025," Shan said.

According to reports, construction of a building is underway in an area north of the Forbidden City that will help solve the museum’s lack of space to restore and repair cultural relics and displays.

The 62.01-hectare area will be dedicated to the restoration of cultural relics such as furniture, carpets and huge paintings that have long been hidden from the public due to limited showcase space.

An average of 80,000 people visit the museum daily.
