　　这个短语起源于四百年前，按照当时的民俗穿裤子的都是男人，妇女得穿裙子，而养家糊口、当家作主的也多半是穿裤子的男人。同时，有些家庭里母亲必须又当妈又当爸，担当起丈夫的责任，当家作主。这时人们就会说这位妇女wear the pants，因为她承担了男人的义务和权力，渐渐地人们就用wear the pants这个短语来指当家做主的人了。

　　【例如】People always have the idea that men should wear the pants.

　　人们一般觉得男人应该当家做主。

　　使某人极为厌烦

　　"bore the pants off someone" means to be exceedingly dull and uninteresting to someone，也就是形容事物极度无聊。类似的短语还有：scare the pants off sb.“把某人吓得要死”，和beat the pants off“把某人痛打了一顿”。

　　【例如】The professor bored the pants off all of us during every class of the semester. We were so ready to put an end to his class.

　　catch表示“撞见，偶然发觉”的意思。这个短语多用于被动语态，表示被撞见。顾名思义，被撞见裤子还没有穿上的自己，将是多么尴尬的事情。 故catch somebody with his pants down 被引申为“出人意料，措手不及”，经常含有“处于狼狈状态”的意思。

　　凭感觉、直觉来判断

　　这个短语也很有意思。据说在几十年前，飞机上的导航装置并不完善，飞行员多半靠观察下方河流或山脉来判断飞机位置。而遇到云层，飞行员只能靠直觉，凭感觉来判断航向，这才有了 fly by the seat of one's pants这样无厘头短语。

　　【例如】When I set up business in Vietnam I had to fly by the seat of my pants. I didn't know anybody, couldn't speak the language and had to learn the local business situation in a hurry.

　　我在越南开办企业的时候，既不认识任何人，也不会说越南话，还得在短促的时间里了解当地的商业形势，只能一切慢慢摸索，全凭感觉。
