前不久A4腰着实火了一把。现在我们一起来看看BBC是如何报道A4腰的，顺便学一些可以用于托福写作的好词好句。

　　Chinese internet users have posted photos online to show they are "paper thin", sparking debate around the world about standards of beauty.

　　近日，中国网民纷纷上传照片以显示他们“人瘦如纸”，此举在全球范围内引发人们对审美标准的热议。

　　The social media craze has seen women hold up a piece of A4 paper vertically, to cover their waists.

　　这一社交媒体热点也即是：女生们竖直拿着一张A4纸把腰遮住。

　　Chinese state newspaper People's Daily described it as a "fitness challenge".

　　But people in China and elsewhere have responded with their own photos, arguing that a 21cm (8.3 inch) waist is unhealthy and unrealistic.

　　中国官方报纸《人民日报》评论说：“这简直就是健身的挑战”。但是在中国和其他地区，人们上传了自己的照片以示回应，认为21厘米(8.3英寸)的腰是不健康的，也是不现实的。

　　语言点解析：

　　1....sparking debate around the world about... 请注意spark用的是它的ing形式sparking，表示伴随(同时发生)，和下面的arguing用法一致。这个句型可以用在托福独立写作的开头段，用来描述某种现象，我们来看一看TPO10的独立写作题目：

　　Playing computer games is a waste of time. Children should not be allowed to play them.

　　这个题目的开头段就可以用这个句型来写：

　　Over the past two decades, computer games have gained in popularity among children. Some psychologists recently have claimed that playing computer games is beneficial to children both physically and mentally, sparking debate around the world about whether children should play computer games.

　　2. vertically /ˋvɝtɪkəli/ adv. 垂直的;竖直的

　　【例】The rocks rose almost vertically from the lake. 这些岩石几乎是垂直着立在湖中的。

　　3....arguing that a 21cm (8.3 inch) waist is unhealthy and unrealistic 这里的argue不再是“争论”的意思，要理解为“主张”或“认为”。Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English对argue这项含义的解释是：to state, giving clear reasons, that something is true, should be done etc。argue这个词可以用在综合写作中，如：The professor argues that..., which contradicts what the reading states. 其次，unhealthy和unrealistic都以un开头，所以unhealthy and unrealistic是一个押头韵的短语，押韵有读起来朗朗上口的音乐的感觉，是写作时的一个亮点。在托福独立写作中，能用上的押韵的短语很多，如first and foremost, rules and regulations, efficiency and effectiveness等等。
