It's time to strap into a theater seat for a new "X-Men" adventure. But in a world increasingly filled with superhero stories, is this one you're going to want to take time for?
"X-Men: Apocalypse" lands in theaters on May 27 and it's a movie with some seriously big shoes to fill. Not only was Bryan Singer's return to the "X-Men" directorial chair met with high marks from reviewers and audiences with 2014's "Days of Future Past," but this is a year that's already seen highs ("Captain America: Civil War") and lows ("Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice") within the comic book film genre.
So is Singer's "X-Men: Apocalypse" worthy of your money at theaters over Memorial Day weekend? If the reviews are any indication, perhaps not. Currently "Apocalypse" sits at a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, which doesn't sound great.
Crave Online's William Bibbiani perhaps sums of many of the reviews best, writing, "The latest 'X-Men' movie is a big, dumb sequel in an era that has led us to expect a lot more from our franchises." Alonso Duralde reviews the film for The Wrap, calling it a "shocking letdown," in part due to "the lack of an interesting villain" and "the fact that the series’ time-travel element is forcing these mutants to meet each other (and the audience) all over again for the first time."
For the AV Club's Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, the conflict of the films has gotten "murkier." "For the franchise’s ballooning, unmanageable cast of mutants, picking sides now seems to have less to do with choosing between cooperation (which the recent movies implicitly distrust) and resistance, and more with whichever flashback-prone white dude’s overbearing savior complex works for you," he writes.
Meanwhile, TimeOut's Tom Huddleston -- which is so close to Tom Hiddleston that it hurts -- was simply left unimpressed. "There are no memorable action scenes," he writes. "And the script is just nonsense, comprised entirely of sarcastic asides, portentous gobbledygook ("The dawn of a new age will rise!" cries Isaac) and insider references that only the faithful will appreciate."
That's not to say there have been no good reviews for the movie. However, those aren't necessarily all that complimentary.
"If nothing else, this spectacularly goofy and sporadically entertaining movie isn't afraid to reimagine human history," says IndieWIRE's David Ehrluch. Digital Spy's Hugh Armitage adds, "'X-Men: Apocalypse' can't reach the levels of maturity and sophistication of Civil War, but it has a messy charm all of its own, and maintains the quality set by the post-Last Stand films."
And of course, there are some who simply enjoyed the movie, like IGN's Daniel Krupa. He writes, "Taken as the next chapter in the series, Apocalypse is an undeniably fun and entertaining adventure and does a pretty good job of establishing Xavier's next class."
