　　The seventh season of The Vampire Diaries has been unlike anything the show has produced to date. Nina Dobrev’s departure last season was the catalyst behind some of the major changes in the storyline this season. The shift in focus, however, has been met with mixed reviews. With two-thirds of the season almost complete, will the hit series be renewed for an eighth season?

　　As the season continues to unfold on its new night on The CW, Julie Plec recently sat down to answer some of the most burning questions fans have about the show. According to Entertainment Weekly, this included whether or not the series will continue beyond its current season.

　　“Well, I sure hope so!” Plec answered one fan who asked about a potential Season 8. “I know we have a very large crew and cast of people who really want to be doing what we love on this show next year, so keep your fingers crossed.”

　　Plec’s comments are good news for fans, especially considering how some doubted the show’s ability to continue without Dobrev. Even still, Plec recently told E Online that Dobrev’s exit from the show made her realize that an end is in sight.

　　In fact, Plec explained how she now realizes that show’s fate is intertwined with the desire of Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley to remain a part of the action. Apparently, Plec is willing to continue the series as long as the two leads stay on board.

　　“I finally realized that my destiny on this show, creatively, is tied into Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. And I mean that in a really good way,” Plec told the outlet. “As long as those boys who I now consider my friends want to keep telling the story, then I won’t walk away from telling the story.”

　　Fortunately for fans, this means that The Vampire Diaries will not abruptly end without a sense of closure. Whenever Somerhalder and Wesley decide that their characters have run their course, Plec promised that they would get together and write a fitting end.

　　“When they are ready to be done telling the story, I will put my pencil down and say that I’m done too, and then we will work together to end it in the best way possible,” she shared. “There’s always things that could go wrong in that scenario, there’s always pressure that can be put on. But…the three of us I’d like to think will make the decision of when the show should be over.”

　　Whether or not the end will include the appearance of Dobrev as Helena is unknown. Considering her significance in the series, there is little doubt that Plec wants to see her character back in action for the series finale.

　　Although Plec is firmly behind the show continuing for another season, that doesn’t mean the network won’t pull the plug early. According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, the reality of a cancellation is looming heavy on Somerhalder’s mind.

　　As the second half of The Vampire Diaries returned to TV, Somerhalder took to social media to drum up support for the series. Not only is this an uncharacteristic move on the part of Somerhalder, but it hinted that the actor might be worried about the show’s ratings. After all, the series was bumped to a new night for the second half of Season 7.

　　Additionally, Somerhalder is currently married to Nikki Reed and reportedly wants to start a family. If this is true, then there is a chance that Somerhalder might not want to return for another season.
