Sherlock Christmas special spoilers: Steven Moffatconfirms Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman willgo back to Victorian London

　　Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat has confirmed the Christmas special is set in Victorian London.

　　The special episode - that has been shot entirely in period dress on period sets - will be set in itsown 'bubble' the show's co-creator revealed at SXSW

　　"The special is its own thing," he told Entertainment Weekly at the festival.

　　"We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have thisspecial.

　　"It's not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it - as we could hardly conceal - it'sVictoria. [Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to beseparate entity on its own."

　　He added: "It's kind of in its own little bubble."

　　Last month Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted filming the Christmas specialin full Victorian regalia.

　　Benedict, 38, was spotted in the super sleuth's trademark deerstalker hat, cape and pipe .

　　While Martin Freeman looked like the Dr Watson of old with a handlebar moustache and bowlerhat.

　　Shots of Victorian period horse drawn carriages seem to suggest the scene is genuinely set in thatera.

　　The Sherlock Holmes stories first appeared in print in 1887 and the famous detective, whofamously never said, "elementary my dear Watson" was brought to life in TV adaptations by thelikes of Basil Rathbone.

　　In 2009 Robert Downey Junior played a Holmes while well rooted in Victorian times had a definitemodern day ruggedness.

　　The Sherlock TV series with Cumberbatch and Freeman placed the detectives in the present day,with Holmes running a blog and Watson as an Afghanistan veteran.
