「Eleventh hour」不是「11点」 英语里的数字千万别乱用!

今天我们要学习的短语,跟数字11有关。它就是eleventh hour。不过它并不表示“11点”,而是表示“最后时刻”。
Eleventh hour:
The last possible moment for doing something.
做某事的最后时刻。
例如:
an eleventh-hour decision
一个最后时刻的决定
既然说到11,我们顺便来说说英文中其他的数字。
数字在英文(尤其是俚语)中,扮演者非常重要的角色。积累一些与数字有关的短语,不仅仅能避免因为理解错误引发的尴尬,还能使你的语言增色不少。

a thousand and one (something) :
A huge or burdensome amount of something. Often followed by "to (do something)."
例如:
I can't drive you to the mall, I already have a thousand and one things to get done today.
我不能开车送你去商场了,今天事情太多了。
a thing or two
a few points of criticism about someone or something.
对于某事的一些意见或者批评。
例如:
Let me tell you a thing or two about your messy yard!
我对你乱七八糟的花园有点意见。
Two is company, (but) three's a crowd.
两个人可以作伴,三个人就有点挤。
A way of asking a third person to leave because you want to be alone with someone. (Often implies that you want to be alone with the person because you are romantically interested in him or her.)
让第三者离开,因为你想单独跟某人在一起。(通常表示你喜欢这个人。)
例如:
When Lucy followed Mark and Nora into the drawing room, Nora turned to her and said, "Two's company, but three's a crowd."
Lucy跟着Mark和Nora进了房间,于是Nora对她说:两个人是个伴,三个人有点挤。
four-one-one (411)
n. information; the details about something or someone. (In the U.S., the telephone number of directory assistance or information is 411.)
信息;某事或某人的细节。(在美国,查询信息的电话号码是411.)
例如:
What’s the 411 on the new guy in the office?
办公室里新来的男生是什么来头?
a bunch of fives
slang A fist.
指“拳头”。
例如:
That kid is in the nurse's office with a bloody nose because the bully gave him a bunch of fives in the face.
护士办公室里的孩子在流鼻血,因为那个恶霸往他脸上打了他一拳。
